在推动联邦德国民主政治文化建设的过程中，哈贝马斯不仅作为一位批判理论家和实践哲学家进行实践中的自我学习，而且作为一位公民和公共知识分子，参与整个民族的集体学习过程，以及与之相连的更大范围内的（全欧洲的甚至全球的）集体学习。在京都讲演中，哈贝马斯列举了他参与的这样一些社会运动和公共讨论：1950年代的被称作“复活节进军”的反对核武器的和平主义抗议活动；1960年代后期的学生抗议运动；1980年代和1990年代的有关纳粹历史作用、德国统一方式、第一次海湾战争、政治避难权等等的争论；以及最近十年来的有关欧洲一体化、生命伦理学和伊拉克战争的争论…
在参加这些公共讨论和社会运动中，哈贝马斯的观点和立场—不仅他的学术观点，而且他的政治立场，偶尔甚至还有他的道德品质—都经常成为议题，包括受到质疑。哈贝马斯一方面意识到活跃在公共领域的知识分子是不能做“爱哭的孩子”的，另一方面也经常在争论中坦率承认自己的错误—不仅在原则上承认自己观点的可错性，而且具体地承认自己某个观点的错误。在哈贝马斯看来，参与公共领域的集体学习过程的最重要理由就在这里：“从我自己的错误中学习，也从别人的错误中学习”。[15]
在哈贝马斯八十寿辰之际写以上文字，是为了祝愿这位批判理论家数十年如一日的学习过程能活力不衰，同时也是为了与这位哲人的其他读者、同道和同行共勉，尽力从他的学习过程当中，从我们各自的学习过程当中、尤其是从我们大家共同参与的融建设性与批判性于一体的学习过程当中，从这些过程的成就和失误当中，学到更多的东西。
